The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook
What to Do Before It Happens — and What to Do When It Does
The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook was created to help students, parents, and campus communities better understand practical personal safety, awareness, preparedness, and real-world decision-making in everyday life.
More Than Self-Defense
A Practical Framework for Everyday Preparedness
The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook teaches readers to think beyond physical self-defense alone. The book explores how awareness, communication, preparation, and decision-making often play the biggest role in helping people avoid dangerous situations before they escalate.
The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook teaches you to think beyond physical defense. You’ll learn how to:
- Read your environment before a situation develops
- Prevent conflict through awareness, not luck
- Communicate your way out of confrontations
- Set and hold firm personal boundaries
- Prepare mentally and physically before danger arrives
- Stay calm and decisive under pressure
- Respond effectively when de-escalation isn't enough
Rather than relying on fear-based messaging or unrealistic scenarios, the book presents practical concepts designed for modern everyday life and campus environments.
Reader Perspectives
What Readers Are
Saying About The Handbook
Students, parents, educators, and professionals have used The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook as a practical introduction to awareness, preparedness, and real-world personal safety concepts. Readers consistently describe the book as approachable, thoughtful, and immediately relevant to everyday life and modern campus environments.
“
I went into Gus's workshop thinking self-defense meant knowing how to throw a punch. I left understanding that the best fight is the one you never have to have.
“
As a parent sending my daughter off to college, this book gave both of us a common language for talking about safety. That alone was worth it.
Designed for Modern Campus Life
Written for Students, Parents, and Campus Communities
Your student is about to live somewhere new — without you nearby, without the routines that kept them grounded, and without any guarantee they’ll recognize a dangerous situation until they’re already in one.
The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook was written for exactly that transition. It gives students a practical framework for making smarter decisions in unfamiliar environments — not by scaring them, but by preparing them.
It’s become a trusted resource for campus programs because it works in the real world:
- College students navigating independence for the first time
- Parents who want their kids equipped, not just warned
- Orientation programs looking for substance over checklists
- Residence life teams building genuine safety culture
- Student organizations hosting meaningful conversations
- Campus administrators preparing for the unexpected
One book. Skills you'll use for the rest of your life.
The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook
The concepts in the Krav Maga Essentials Handbook don’t expire after graduation.
They travel with you — to new cities, new jobs, new situations you haven’t faced yet.

A short passage from The Krav Maga Essentials Handbook exploring awareness, preparedness, and the mindset behind practical personal safety.
“ The best time to prepare is before you’re in danger. ”
The second-best time is right now.
I wasn’t your typical candidate for a career in personal protection. Far from it. I had no athletic background and no interest in fitness. I was a Speech and Debate kid—drawn to words, ideas, and intellectual competition, not the weight room or the dojo. Like many academically focused students, I lived in a bubble of assumed safety and truly believed that I was immune to violence. Also, I was six feet tall and approaching 190 pounds—not the physical presentation of a person likely to be preyed upon. “Bad things,” I believed, happened to other people, in other places, under very different circumstances from my own. And then I got mugged. Twice. Being an unaware and unprepared victim burst my bubble, and these two experiences changed the course of my life.
About the Author
Gus Bottazzi
Gus Bottazzi wasn’t supposed to end up here.
He was a Speech and Debate kid — drawn to words and ideas, not the weight room. He had no athletic background, no self-defense training, and every reason to believe he’d never need either. Then he got mugged. Twice.
Those two experiences didn’t just change his habits. They changed his life’s direction. Gus spent the next 30 years studying Krav Maga, training thousands of students, and building programs for colleges and universities across the region — not because he was always tough, but because he learned firsthand what being unprepared actually costs.
That’s the perspective he brings to every workshop, every seminar, and every page of this book.
