Introduction
The best time to prepare is before you’re in danger.
The second-best time is right now.
I wasn’t your typical candidate for a career in personal protection. Far from it. I had no athletic background and no interest in fitness. I was a Speech and Debate kid—drawn to words, ideas, and intellectual competition, not the weight room or the dojo. Like many academically focused students, I lived in a bubble of assumed safety and truly believed that I was immune to violence. Also, I was six feet tall and approaching 190 pounds—not the physical presentation of a person likely to be preyed upon. “Bad things,” I believed, happened to other people, in other places, under very different circumstances from my own. And then I got mugged. Twice. Being an unaware and unprepared victim burst my bubble, and these two experiences changed the course of my life.
